The great Shiva temple situated on the Peacock island in the middle of the Brahmaputra in Guwahati attracts devotees from all over the country during Shiva Ratri. One can visit the temple by crossing the river by country boat plying from Kachari ghat. On the north bank of the Brahmaputra, opposite Guwahati, where the third Pandava Arjun is believed to have watered his horse while undertaking journey during Ashwamedh Yajna. Regular ferry services are available to this place. The temple built by an Ahom king in 1594. It was renewed later in the 20th century following its destruction during an earthquake.

The island is also known as Urvasi Island. Located here is the Urvasi Kund - where it is believed that Urvasi the celestial damsel brings nectar for the enjoyment of Kamakhya.

Shiva - Umanda or Bhayananda is worshipped with fanfare on full moon days especially on Mondays. Also celebrated here is the Shiva Chaturdasi.

Legends

According to legend the Hindu deity Lord Shiva burnt the god of desire Kama to ashes.

Getting there and Around

By Air : Flights are available to Guwahati from many destinations of India including the metropolitan cities.

By Rail : Guwahati is well connected with the rest of India through a good railway network.

By Road : Guwahati can also be reached through road transport from the West Bengal side. From Guwahati, regular bus services are available to most places of Assam and the north-eastern region.
